Sanyo Electric Co. is entering final talks to sell its cellular phone production division to Kyocera Corp. for 40 billion to 50 billion yen. Sanyo Electric Co has already sold its wholly owned cellphone sales unit, Telecom Sanyo Co., to Telepark Corp., a subsidiary of trading house Mitsui & Co., for 4.8 billion yen in October.
The reason behind this divesting is that sanyo electric Co. has been ailing on its heavy loss on a strong earthquake that hit its key computer chip plant in 2004. Now Sanyo has decided to focus on resource of battery and other profitable areas. When the sanyo’s cell phone division incurred with loss in the year ended in March this year. Sanyo approached Kyocera and Sharp Corp. in a bid to divest the division and has chosen Kyocera for final negotiations, as informed by the company’s media division.
